An affidavit of one and the same person is a sworn statement confirming that two or more names on your documents, for example a passport, a degree certificate and a bank record, belong to the same individual. You sign it before a notary public, who checks your ID and applies the notary seal; with us, that is our in-house notary public at our Business Bay office, online, or on a home visit. It is the standard fix for a name spelling difference, a missing middle name or a different name order between your papers.

If a bank, university, employer or visa office has told you your name "does not match" across two documents, this is usually the document they are asking for. It does not change either original document. It sits alongside them and states, under oath, that both names refer to you.

Quick answer

## Quick answer

- An affidavit of one and the same person links two or more versions of your name to one identity.
- Common triggers: passport transliteration differs from a certificate, a surname or father's name is missing or reordered, or a document uses a maiden or previous name.
- You sign it before our in-house notary public in Dubai. We prepare the wording first.
- Bring every document that shows each version of your name, plus your passport and Emirates ID.
- If the affidavit will be used abroad, it usually needs MOFAIC attestation, and sometimes embassy attestation, after notarisation.

## When you need a same name affidavit

The affidavit exists to close a name discrepancy, not to explain every possible document mismatch. The most common cases we see are:

- **Spelling differences between transliterations.** Arabic-to-English or another script-to-English transliteration can render the same name two different ways, for example "Mohammed" against "Muhammad", or a vowel dropped in one document.
- **A missing or reordered father's name or surname.** Many countries' civil records include a father's name or a full patronymic that a passport or degree certificate shortens or omits.
- **Name order.** Some certificates list surname first, others given name first, and the two can look like different people on paper.
- **A maiden name or a previous legal name** appearing on an older document while current documents show the new name.
- **Clerical errors** on a single certificate that were never corrected at source.

Banks processing a mortgage or inheritance, universities verifying a qualification, employers running a background check, and visa or immigration offices are the parties who most often ask for this affidavit.

## Affidavit vs a one and same certificate from your home country

Some countries issue their own official "one and same" or "single and same person" certificate through a local authority, court or notary in that country, rather than through an affidavit sworn in Dubai. If the receiving authority specifically asks for that home-country certificate, an affidavit sworn in Dubai will not substitute for it. If they simply ask you to "resolve the name discrepancy" without naming a specific document, a notarised affidavit prepared and signed here is normally accepted, and it is the faster route for someone based in Dubai.

Check what the requesting authority asked for before choosing which route to take. We can tell you which route fits your situation.

## Documents to bring

Bring every document that shows a version of your name that needs to be linked, plus your identification:

- Passport (current, and the previous one if the name changed)
- Emirates ID
- The document or documents that triggered the request, for example the certificate, bank form or visa letter
- Educational certificates, if the discrepancy involves a qualification
- Birth certificate, if the father's name or family name is the source of the difference
- Marriage certificate, if a maiden name is involved

Bring originals plus a copy of each. If a document is in a language other than Arabic or English and the receiving office needs it translated, we arrange that through a translator registered with the Ministry of Justice.

## Sample structure of an affidavit of one and the same person

A one and the same person affidavit generally follows this structure. This is a description of the sections it should contain, not a template to copy and sign without a notary reviewing it against your documents:

1. **Title and affiant details.** The affidavit's title, followed by your full legal name, nationality, passport number and address.
2. **The statement of identity.** A clear declaration that you, the affiant, are one and the same person as named in the listed documents, naming each name variant exactly as it appears.
3. **The documents referenced.** Each document listed by type, number and issuing authority, showing the exact name spelling used in it.
4. **The reason for the discrepancy** , stated briefly and factually, for example a transliteration difference or a missing patronymic.
5. **The oath.** A statement that you swear the above is true, sworn before the notary public.
6. **Signature block.** Your signature, the date, the place, and the notary public's certification, seal and signature.

We draft this wording to match your specific documents rather than working from a generic template, because the exact spellings and document numbers must be accurate for the affidavit to hold up with the receiving office.

## Notarisation and attestation for use abroad

Signing before a notary public in Dubai makes the affidavit a notarised instrument, valid for use inside the UAE. If the affidavit is going to a foreign authority, for example a university or immigration office outside the UAE, it will usually also need MOFAIC attestation in the UAE, because the UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention and no apostille applies here. Some destination countries also require their embassy in the UAE to attest the document before it is accepted, or their own consular process once it arrives. Check the exact requirement with the receiving office before you travel or submit, since it varies by country and by institution and no apostille is available for UAE documents.

Fees

## Turnaround and cost

The notarisation fee for an affidavit follows the federal notary fee schedule under Cabinet Resolution No. 19 of 2024, which sets AED 300 for executing and notarising an affidavit. Fees for MOFAIC attestation and embassy attestation, if needed, are separate and depend on the destination.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

### What is an affidavit of one and the same person?

It is a sworn statement, signed before a notary public, declaring that two or more names appearing on your documents belong to the same individual. It is used to resolve a name spelling or format discrepancy without altering the original documents.

### When do I need a same name affidavit?

You need one when a bank, university, employer, visa office or other authority points out that your name is spelled or ordered differently across two or more of your documents, and asks you to confirm they refer to the same person.

### How do I get an affidavit of one and the same person in Dubai?

Bring your passport, Emirates ID and every document that shows a version of your name to us. We check the documents and draft the affidavit wording, and you sign it before our in-house notary public.

### What documents are needed for a one and the same person affidavit?

At minimum, your current passport, Emirates ID and the specific documents that show the differing name versions. Bring originals and copies. If a document is in another language and needs translating, bring that too.

### Is a one and same certificate the same as an affidavit?

Not always. Some countries, including India, issue their own official certificate through a local authority rather than through a Dubai-sworn affidavit. Check what the requesting authority specifically asked for before choosing between the two.

### How do I write an affidavit for the same person with different names?

State your full legal name, list each document and the exact name spelling it uses, explain briefly why the names differ, and swear that all versions refer to you. We draft this wording for you and check it against your actual documents before your appointment.

### Does the affidavit need attestation to be used abroad?

Usually yes. Notarisation makes it valid in the UAE, but a foreign authority will typically also want MOFAIC attestation, and sometimes embassy attestation, since the UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention and no apostille applies here. Confirm the exact requirement with the receiving office first.
