Notary attestation in Abu Dhabi covers signing a document, such as a power of attorney, an affidavit or a declaration, in front of a notary public or licensed private notary, who checks your identity and applies the notarial seal. Our in-house notary public can notarise your document at our Business Bay office in Dubai or through our online notary public services, and a document notarised in Dubai is generally valid in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi runs its own judicial system, separate from Dubai Courts, through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. This page explains how notarisation works in the emirate, what documents it usually covers, and how Notary Services Dubai serves clients based in or dealing with Abu Dhabi and Mussafah.

If you already hold a signed document and only need a copy of it certified rather than a fresh notarisation, that is a slightly different job. See [certified true copy attestation in Abu Dhabi](https://notaryservicesdubai.com/certified-true-copy-attestation-in-abu-dhabi/) for that route.

Quick answer

## At a glance

- The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) is Abu Dhabi's own judicial authority; it is separate from Dubai Courts and from Dubai's private notary system.
- Notarial acts across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, sit under Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2022 on the regulation of the notary profession.
- Abu Dhabi offers TAMM, the emirate's digital government platform, for a range of judicial and notarial transactions.
- A document notarised anywhere in the UAE is generally valid across the country; the notarial act itself is not tied to one emirate.
- Documents going abroad after notarisation need MOFAIC attestation as a separate step; there is no apostille route because the UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention.

## Abu Dhabi's notarial system: ADJD and TAMM

Abu Dhabi is administered by its own judicial authority, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, rather than by Dubai Courts. That matters because Dubai's private notary roll, kept by Dubai Courts under Dubai Law No. 4 of 2013, is a Dubai-specific arrangement. Abu Dhabi runs its notarial services through ADJD channels and through TAMM, the emirate's digital services platform for government and judicial transactions. The federal law behind the notary profession is the same one that applies in Dubai, so the underlying role, a notary checking identity and witnessing a signature, is consistent across the country even though the local administration differs.

For a resident or visitor, the practical effect is that a document can usually be notarised wherever is convenient, whether that is Abu Dhabi, Dubai or another emirate, and it does not have to be notarised in Abu Dhabi just because the document will later be used there.

## Notary public and private notary in Abu Dhabi

As in the rest of the UAE, notarial acts in Abu Dhabi can be carried out by a government notary public or by a licensed private notary, typically a lawyer authorised to perform notarial acts. The two routes generally differ in where the appointment is held and who staffs it, not in what a notarised document means once it is issued. If you are unsure which route fits your document, tell us what it is for and we confirm the right one.

For a fuller explanation of how the two routes differ in general, see [public vs private notary](https://notaryservicesdubai.com/public-vs-private-notary/).

## What can be notarised in Abu Dhabi

The most common documents we help Abu Dhabi based and Abu Dhabi bound clients with are:

- **Powers of attorney** , general or special, for property, company matters, court cases or personal affairs.
- **Affidavits and declarations** , such as a declaration of residency or a sworn statement for use with a bank, employer or authority.
- **Certified true copies** , where a copy of an original document needs to be checked and stamped as a genuine match.
- **Signature witnessing** , where a document simply needs your signature verified before a notary rather than a full notarial act.

Each of these follows the same core steps: you sign in front of the notary, the notary confirms your identity and, where relevant, that you understand what you are signing, then applies the seal.

## In person or online

The physical act of signing in front of a notary generally still requires you or your representative to be present, whether in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or wherever the appointment is booked. Some preparatory steps, drafting the document, confirming requirements and booking the appointment, can be handled remotely, and our online notary public services cover the signing itself for documents that qualify. If you are outside the UAE entirely, a UAE embassy or consulate in your country can usually notarise or attest documents intended for use here, which is a different route from ADJD or Dubai Courts.

## Documents to bring

For most notarial acts in Abu Dhabi you will need:

- Your original Emirates ID, or passport if you do not hold an Emirates ID.
- The document itself, drafted and ready to sign, with any supporting papers it references.
- Where the document involves a company, the trade licence and authorisation for whoever is signing on the company's behalf.

We confirm the specific list for your document before your appointment, so nothing is missing on the day.

## Areas we cover: Abu Dhabi city, Mussafah and Al Ain

Clients contact us from across the emirate, including Abu Dhabi city, the Mussafah industrial and residential area, and Al Ain. We do not hold an Abu Dhabi office. Our in-house notary public works from our Business Bay office in Dubai, and we also offer online notary public services; ask us whether a home visit is possible at your location. Office open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. WhatsApp and online requests answered 24/7.

## Attesting a notarised document for use abroad

Notarisation in Abu Dhabi confirms your signature and identity. If the document is then going to another country, for example to support a visa application, a property matter or a company registration abroad, it usually needs MOFAIC attestation as a separate step afterwards. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so there is no apostille for a document notarised in or intended for use in Abu Dhabi. If a document is coming into the UAE from abroad, it generally needs to be attested in its country of origin first, then attested again by MOFAIC once it arrives here.

Fees

## Fees for notary attestation in Abu Dhabi

Notarisation fees depend on the document type and value. The federal fee schedule under Cabinet Resolution No. 19 of 2024 sets figures such as AED 100 per party for executing or notarising a general or special power of attorney and AED 300 for executing and notarising an affidavit, though the schedule that applies to your document depends on which channel processes it.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I get a document notarised in Abu Dhabi?

You sign the document in front of a notary public or licensed private notary, who checks your identity and applies the seal, through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department or TAMM channels. Since a document notarised in Dubai is generally valid across the UAE, our in-house notary public can also notarise it at our Business Bay office or online.

### Is there a private notary in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi's judicial system includes licensed professionals who carry out notarial acts alongside government notary public channels. Tell us your document and we confirm which route applies.

### What is the difference between a notary public and a private notary in Abu Dhabi?

A notary public is the government channel run through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, while a private notary route, where available, is typically staffed by a licensed lawyer authorised to carry out notarial acts. Both result in a document with the same legal notarial status once signed and sealed. See [public vs private notary](https://notaryservicesdubai.com/public-vs-private-notary/) for the fuller comparison.

### What documents do I need for notarisation in Abu Dhabi?

You generally need your original Emirates ID or passport and the document itself ready to sign, plus company papers if a business is involved. We confirm the exact list before your appointment.

### How much does notarisation cost in Abu Dhabi?

Cost depends on the document type and, for higher value instruments, the value stated in it. We confirm the cost for your specific document before booking.

### Is there a notary public in Mussafah?

We take enquiries from clients based in Mussafah. Tell us your location and document and we confirm the most practical option, such as our Business Bay office or our online notary public services.

### Can I get a document notarised online in Abu Dhabi?

Some steps, drafting the document and booking the appointment, can be handled remotely, but the notary generally needs to see you sign in person or by an approved virtual attendance method. Our online notary public services cover documents that qualify.

### Can a document notarised in Dubai be used in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Notarisation is a notarial act under the same federal legal framework wherever in the UAE it takes place, so a document notarised in Dubai is generally accepted in Abu Dhabi. If you are already in Dubai, see [notary public in Dubai](https://notaryservicesdubai.com/notary-public-dubai/) for that process.
