If you need proof of address in the UAE, the usual documents are your Ejari or tenancy contract, a DEWA or other utility bill, a bank statement, or an employer or landlord letter. Many overseas banks, brokers and embassies will not accept a plain photocopy of these, they ask for a certified copy: a copy stamped and signed by a notary public or another authorised certifier to confirm it matches the original. Our in-house notary public certifies these copies at our Business Bay office or on a home visit. This page covers which document to use, how certification works, and what to do if you are not on the tenancy contract.

Quick answer

## Quick answer

- Standard proof of address: Ejari or tenancy contract, DEWA bill, or a recent bank statement.
- No tenancy in your name: a landlord letter or a declaration of residency, notarised.
- A certified copy adds a notary's stamp and signature confirming the copy matches the original.
- If the copy is going outside the UAE, it usually needs MOFAIC attestation on top of certification.

## What counts as proof of address in the UAE

Different receiving bodies ask for different documents, but a handful come up again and again.

**Ejari or tenancy contract.** Ejari is the Dubai Land Department's online registration of a tenancy contract. It shows your name, the property address and the lease term, which makes it one of the strongest proof of address documents for residents.

**DEWA bill or another utility bill.** A recent Dubai Electricity and Water Authority bill, or an equivalent from another emirate's utility provider, shows your name and the billing address, usually with a Makani number for the property. Most receiving bodies want a bill from the last one to three months, though the exact age limit is set by whoever is asking for it, not by a fixed UAE rule.

**Bank statement.** A statement from a UAE bank showing your name and residential address works as proof of address for many purposes, including for some of the same overseas banks and brokers that ask you to prove where you live.

**Employer or landlord letter.** If you live in employer-provided accommodation or are not the named tenant, a letter from your employer or landlord confirming your address can stand in for a tenancy contract.

**Emirates ID and residence visa.** These confirm your legal residency status in the UAE but do not always show a current address, so they are usually asked for alongside one of the documents above rather than instead of it.

## When a certified copy is asked for

A certified copy is a photocopy of your document with a notary's or other authorised certifier's stamp, signature and wording confirming it is a true copy of the original. It is asked for whenever the receiving body cannot see your original in person and wants assurance the copy has not been altered. That comes up most often with:

- **Foreign banks and brokers** running know your customer (KYC) checks when you open or maintain an account from outside the UAE, or from within the UAE for an account held abroad.
- **Embassies and consulates** processing a visa, residency or citizenship application where you need to show a UAE address.
- **Universities and other institutions abroad** that ask for certified address evidence as part of an application or enrolment.
- **UAE government and business processes** where the original cannot be handed over because you still need it.

If you are simply registering with a UAE bank or utility provider in person, they will often check your original document themselves and you will not need a certified copy at all.

## No tenancy in your name: landlord letter or declaration of residency

Not everyone renting in Dubai has their name on the Ejari. If you are living with a spouse, a sponsor, a friend, or in company housing, you have two common routes:

1. **A landlord or tenant letter.** The named tenant or landlord writes a letter confirming you live at the address. This is stronger when it is notarised, since notarisation confirms the identity of the person signing it.
2. **A declaration of residency.** This is a signed statement, usually notarised, in which you declare your residential address yourself. It is used when no one else can provide a supporting letter, or when the receiving body specifically asks for a sworn declaration rather than a letter. See our [declaration of residency in the UAE](https://notaryservicesdubai.com/declaration-of-residency-uae/) page for what it should say and how it is notarised.

Either route needs some backing document behind it, such as a copy of the actual tenancy contract or a utility bill in the named tenant's name, so the notary and the receiving body can see the address is real.

## How certification works and who can certify

Certification in the UAE means someone confirms in writing that a copy matches the original. Depending on what the document is and who is asking for it, that can be:

- **A notary public or licensed private notary** , who stamps and signs the copy after comparing it to the original you bring in.
- **The issuing body itself** , for documents like Ejari, which the Dubai Land Department can reissue or verify directly.
- **A bank** , which can sometimes certify its own statement.

Which certifier a particular receiving body will accept varies. When in doubt, ask the receiving body directly what form of certification they want before you get the copy made, since redoing it costs time.

For the general process of getting any document certified as a true copy in Dubai, including what to bring and what the certification wording says, see our [certified true copy attestation in Dubai](https://notaryservicesdubai.com/certified-true-copy-attestation-in-dubai/) page.

## Attestation if the document goes abroad

Certification confirms the copy matches the original. Attestation is a separate step that confirms the document itself is genuine, and it is usually asked for when the document is going to be used outside the UAE.

The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so there is no apostille route for a UAE document. Instead, a document that needs to be recognised abroad generally goes through MOFAIC (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) for attestation in the UAE, and then, if the receiving country requires it, through that country's embassy in the UAE. If you are sending a UAE proof of address to your home country, check with the receiving body whether MOFAIC attestation is enough or whether their own embassy also needs to stamp it.

If your document is in Arabic and the receiving body needs it in another language, or vice versa, it will need translation by a legal translator registered with the UAE Ministry of Justice before it can be notarised or attested.

Fees

## Turnaround and cost

Where a document needs MOFAIC attestation as well as notarisation, that adds a separate government fee: MOFAIC charges AED 150 for personal documents.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

### What counts as proof of address in the UAE?

An Ejari or tenancy contract, a DEWA or other utility bill, a recent bank statement, or an employer or landlord letter are the documents most commonly accepted. Which one you need depends on who is asking for it.

### How do I get proof of address in the UAE?

Start with a document already in your name, such as your Ejari, a utility bill or a bank statement. If none of these carry your name, a landlord letter or a notarised declaration of residency, backed by a copy of the actual tenancy contract, can stand in.

### What is a certified proof of address?

It is a copy of your address document with a notary's or other authorised certifier's stamp and signature confirming the copy matches the original. Some receiving bodies also ask for the certified copy to be attested.

### Who can certify proof of address in Dubai?

A notary public or licensed private notary can certify a copy after comparing it to the original; our in-house notary public does this at our Business Bay office. For some documents, such as Ejari, the issuing body can also verify or reissue it directly.

### Can I use an affidavit as proof of address?

Yes, in the form of a declaration of residency, a sworn statement where you declare your address. It is typically used when no tenancy contract or utility bill exists in your name, and it carries more weight when backed by a supporting document such as a copy of the actual lease.

### Does proof of address need to be certified for a foreign bank?

Often, yes, since the bank cannot see your original document in person. Many overseas banks and brokers ask for a certified copy as part of their know your customer checks, and some also ask for attestation.

### What if my name is not on the tenancy contract?

Ask the named tenant or landlord for a letter confirming you live at the address, ideally notarised, or use a declaration of residency backed by a copy of the tenancy contract. See our [declaration of residency in the UAE](https://notaryservicesdubai.com/declaration-of-residency-uae/) page for the format.
