Affidavit of Single Status in Dubai
An affidavit of single status is a sworn statement confirming that you are not currently married, given before a notary public who checks your ID and applies the seal. Our in-house notary public does this at our Business Bay office, online, or on a home visit. Marriage registries abroad, embassies and some visa applications ask for it when there is no other easy way to prove you are free to marry or that your civil status is unmarried.
It is different from a marriage certificate or a divorce decree because it does not record a specific event. It is your own sworn declaration of your current status, backed by your ID and, where relevant, by details of a previous marriage that has ended.
Quick answer
Quick answer
- An affidavit of single status is a sworn declaration, signed before a notary public, that you are currently unmarried.
- It is most often asked for when marrying abroad, or by an embassy or consulate processing a visa or civil registration.
- A singleness certificate from your home country is a different, separate document, sometimes needed in addition, sometimes instead. Check which one the receiving office wants.
- You sign the affidavit yourself, before a notary public in Dubai, with valid ID.
- Arabic translation is arranged where the receiving office asks for it.
Who asks for this affidavit, and why
This affidavit comes up in three main situations:
- Marriage abroad. Many countries’ marriage registries require proof that neither party is already married before they will register the marriage.
- Embassy and consular processes. Some embassies and consulates in the UAE accept, or specifically ask for, this kind of locally sworn declaration as part of a marriage or visa file.
- Visa applications where a country’s immigration authority asks the applicant to confirm marital status as part of a family or fiance visa category.
The affidavit states your status as of the date you sign it. It does not replace a marriage certificate, a divorce decree, or a death certificate for a deceased spouse, all of which may still be needed alongside it depending on your history.
Affidavit vs a singleness certificate from your home country
A singleness certificate is a different document: it is issued by an authority in your home country (a civil registrar, court or similar body) rather than sworn as an affidavit here in Dubai. Some countries issue this as a standard civil status document; others do not issue one at all, which is exactly why the affidavit route exists.
Whether you need the home-country certificate, the Dubai-sworn affidavit, or both depends entirely on what the receiving marriage registry, embassy or consulate has asked for. If your home country issues its own singleness certificate and the receiving office specifically names it, that certificate will usually also need its own attestation chain before it can be used abroad, separate from the affidavit route described here. See documents attestation in Dubai for how that chain works.
Who can sign, and what ID to bring
You sign the affidavit yourself, in person, before the notary public. Bring:
- Passport
- Emirates ID (if you are a resident) or your visit visa page (if you are a visitor)
- Details of any previous marriage that has ended: the marriage certificate and the divorce decree or death certificate, as applicable
- Any document the receiving marriage registry, embassy or consulate has specifically requested
If you were previously married and are now divorced or widowed, the affidavit should state that clearly rather than simply saying “single”, since the receiving authority will usually want the history, not just the current label.

Sample wording
This affidavit generally covers these elements. This describes the sections it contains, not a template to sign without review against your own documents and the receiving office’s requirements:
- Title and affiant details. Your full legal name, nationality, passport number, date of birth and address.
- The declaration. A statement that you are currently unmarried, specifying whether this is because you have never married, are divorced, or are widowed.
- Marriage history, where relevant: date and place of a previous marriage, and how and when it ended.
- Purpose, stated briefly, for example “for the purpose of marriage registration in [country]”.
- The oath. A statement that you swear the above is true, sworn before the notary public.
- Signature block. Your signature, the date, the place, and the notary public’s certification, seal and signature.
We draft this wording around your actual circumstances, marriage history and the receiving office’s requirement, rather than a fixed template.
Notarisation, attestation and Arabic translation
Signing before a notary public in Dubai makes the affidavit a notarised instrument. If it is going to a foreign marriage registry, embassy or consulate, it will usually also need MOFAIC attestation, since the UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention and no apostille applies here. Some receiving countries additionally require their own embassy in the UAE to attest the document.
Where the receiving office asks for the affidavit in Arabic, or in Arabic alongside English, we arrange the translation through a translator registered with the Ministry of Justice before notarisation.
Fees
Turnaround and cost
The notarisation fee for an affidavit follows the federal notary fee schedule under Cabinet Resolution No. 19 of 2024, which sets AED 300 for executing and notarising an affidavit. Translation, MOFAIC attestation and any embassy attestation are charged separately.

How we help
How we help

Tell us who is asking for the affidavit and why, your marriage history, and any specific wording the receiving office wants. There are three ways to get it notarised with us: in person at our Business Bay office with our in-house notary public, through our online notary public services, or on a home visit. We draft the affidavit and arrange Arabic translation if needed. You sign in front of our in-house notary public, who checks your ID and applies the seal. If the document then needs MOFAIC attestation or embassy attestation for use abroad, we guide you through that step too.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is an affidavit of single status?
It is a sworn statement, signed before a notary public, declaring that you are currently unmarried. It is used most often for marriage registration abroad or by embassies and consulates as part of a marriage or visa process.
How do I get an affidavit of single status in Dubai?
Bring your passport, Emirates ID or visa page, and details of any previous marriage that has ended. We draft the affidavit around your circumstances, and you sign it before our in-house notary public.
Is a singleness certificate the same as an affidavit of single status?
No. A singleness certificate is issued by an authority in your home country, while the affidavit is sworn here before a notary public in Dubai. Which one you need depends on what the receiving marriage registry, embassy or consulate has asked for.
Does a singleness certificate need attestation in the UAE?
If your home country issues one and you bring it to the UAE for use here, it will typically need attestation in its country of issue and then MOFAIC attestation in the UAE before it is accepted, in the same way as other foreign civil documents. See documents attestation in Dubai.
Who can sign an affidavit of single status?
You sign it yourself, as the affiant, in person before the notary public, who verifies your identity from your passport or Emirates ID before witnessing your signature.
What should an affidavit of single status say?
It should state your full legal name and identity details, declare that you are currently unmarried, give brief details of any previous marriage that has ended, and state the purpose for which the affidavit is being sworn.
Where can I get proof of single status?
In Dubai, you can have this affidavit drafted and sworn before a notary public. Some people instead obtain a singleness certificate from an authority in their home country. Check with the receiving office which route it accepts.
