Acknowledgement of Cash Receipt in the UAE

An acknowledgement of cash receipt (also written acknowledgment of cash receipt) is a short signed statement confirming that one person handed a specific amount of cash to another, for a stated reason, on a stated date. In the UAE, people use it for a single payment, rent, a deposit, a private car sale, a loan being paid back, so both sides have a record of that one transaction. Our in-house notary public notarises it at our Business Bay office, online, or on a home visit.

This page covers what to put in it, when people notarise one, and how we prepare and notarise it.

Quick answer

At a glance

  • An acknowledgement of cash receipt records a single cash payment: who paid, who received, how much and why.
  • It is a shorter, one-off document, unlike an acknowledgement of debt, which records an ongoing debt and a repayment plan.
  • It can be signed privately, or notarised before a notary public in Dubai for a stronger, independently verified record.
  • The evidential weight it carries in a dispute depends on how it was signed and current UAE law.
  • We prepare the document, notarise it with our in-house notary public and arrange the Arabic translation if you need one.

What it is and when people use it

This document is written proof that cash changed hands. Because cash payments leave no bank trail, people commonly ask for one when:

  • Paying or receiving rent in cash, especially a deposit or a month paid up front.
  • A private car sale, where the buyer pays cash and wants proof, or the seller wants proof the full price was paid.
  • A personal loan being repaid, so the person paying back has evidence the amount was handed over.
  • A deposit on a purchase or service, before a fuller contract is signed.

It is not the same as an acknowledgement of debt. A debt acknowledgement records money still owed and how it will be repaid over time. A cash receipt acknowledgement records a payment that has already been made, in full, for one thing.

What it should include, with a sample layout

Keep it simple and specific:

  • Full names of the person who paid (payer) and the person who received the cash (payee).
  • Identification details, Emirates ID or passport number, for both.
  • Amount paid, in figures and in words.
  • Date and place of the payment.
  • What the payment was for (rent, deposit, car sale, loan repayment).
  • Signatures of both payer and payee, and a witness signature if the parties want one.

A simple layout looks like this:

I, [payee’s full name], holder of Emirates ID / passport [number], acknowledge receipt of [amount in figures and words] in cash from [payer’s full name], holder of Emirates ID / passport [number], on [date], at [place], for [reason for payment]. Signature of payee: __________ Signature of payer: __________ Witness: __________

Treat this as a starting layout. We adjust the wording to fit your situation before it is signed or notarised.

Signed receipt vs notarised receipt

A signed cash receipt acknowledgement between the two parties is a private document. Notarising it means both parties sign it in front of a notary public in Dubai, who checks their ID and confirms they signed willingly, then applies the seal. That gives the document an independently verified record of who signed it and when. What weight either version carries if the payment is later disputed depends on current UAE law and the facts of the case.

Talk to us

Tell us what the document is and where it will be used. We check it and notarise it in person, online or at your home.

Does it need to be notarised

Not always. For a small, low-risk payment between people who trust each other, a signed and dated receipt may be enough. For a larger amount, a car sale, or a payment where a dispute is more likely, notarising it is worth the extra step because of the verified record it creates. If the receipt needs to be used before Dubai Courts and was not drafted in Arabic, it will also need a certified translation by a legal translator registered with the Ministry of Justice.

Steps to prepare and notarise

  1. Tell us the details. The amount, the reason for the payment, and who is paying and receiving.
  2. We draft the document, in English or bilingual English and Arabic.
  3. Both parties review it and confirm the amount, date and details are correct.
  4. Notarise it. Both parties sign before a notary public in Dubai, who checks ID and applies the seal.
  5. Translate it if needed, for use before Dubai Courts or another official body.

There are three ways to get it notarised with us: in person at our Business Bay office with our in-house notary public, through our online notary public services, or on a home visit. We prepare your cash receipt acknowledgement, in English or bilingual with Arabic, matched to the payment it covers, and arrange the Arabic translation if your document needs one. Our in-house notary public checks your IDs, witnesses the signatures and applies the seal. You and the other party review and sign; we manage the paperwork around it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an acknowledgement of cash receipt?

It is a short, signed statement confirming that a specific amount of cash was handed over from one person to another, for a stated reason, on a stated date.

Is an acknowledgement receipt legally valid?

A signed acknowledgement of cash receipt is a valid private document between the two parties. Notarising it adds an independently verified record of who signed it and when.

What should a cash receipt acknowledgement include?

The full names and ID details of the payer and payee, the amount in figures and words, the date and place, what the payment was for, and signatures. See the layout above.

Does a cash receipt acknowledgement need to be notarised?

Not always. Smaller payments between trusted parties are often fine with a signed receipt. For larger amounts, a car sale, or a payment more likely to be disputed, notarising it is worth doing.

Is there a sample acknowledgement of cash receipt for the UAE?

Yes, see the sample layout above. We adjust it to your situation before it is signed or notarised.
